One transaction, one account, one date
Every transaction is a single movement of money against a single account, on the date you chose. A transfer is recorded as a pair and is never counted as income or expense.
Balances are derived, not stored
An account's balance is its opening balance plus all of its transactions. An investment is its quantity times its latest valuation. Every summary figure can be rebuilt from the underlying records, so a discrepancy always has a cause you can find.
A budget for the household, a limit for a person
A budget covers the whole household, per category, per period. Inside it, one member can be given a spending limit. The authority to set one belongs to the role, not to anyone's gender.
Bills you do not have to keep in your head
A recurring rule makes a bill appear when it is due, with a due date and a paid or unpaid state. The rule itself is not a transaction — the transaction appears when the bill falls due.
What is owed, with its terms
Record the counterparty, the amount, the terms and the payment schedule — for what the household owes and for what is owed to it.
Holdings and their valuations
Keep how much is held and where its price is read from. Day-to-day change is the difference between two valuations, not a figure that appears from nowhere.
Entered by hand, on purpose

Open to the household unless you say otherwise
A transaction is visible to the household by default, because shared money needs to be seen together. Any transaction can still be made private or opened to named people only.
